Matteo Villa was born in Varese in 1969. He grew up surrounded by the irresistible fascination of the drafting machine and the building site. He graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano after attending the Liceo Classico Cairoli as part of a wonderful Class III C graduating in 1988. In 1995, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and obtained his second single-cycle master’s degree, laying the foundations for his professional career as Head of Specialist Services Integration – a role that best summarises his professional activity over the last ten years. For a few years, he worked as a visiting researcher at the university. He gave it up, disillusioned by the practical outcomes and the problems associated with the 3+2 reform in the field of engineering, which he considered inadequate for making students aware of the complexities of design. He has been a member of the Varese Ordine Architetti (PPC) since 1996 and is therefore celebrating 30 years of membership this year. He has been a member of the Varese Ordine Ingegneri since 2003. He is qualified as a safety coordinator for temporary and mobile construction sites. He is registered with the Ministry of the Interior as a fire safety professional. He is a certified project manager. He is responsible for managing information systems specifically for design purposes. Since 1996, he has been a co-owner of the design firm Vignolo Villa Architetti Associati, which he founded together with architect Claudia Vignolo Villa, a freelance architect since 1969, who is also his mother and his first mentor in the ethical principles of the profession. In 2022, he founded behind architecture srl, describing it as “an engineering company run by architects”, in which he brought together the specialist expertise of many colleagues with whom he had previously completed significant projects as part of a temporary partnership.
